ORLANDO, Fla. – During the holiday season, the sound of bells ringing and donations pouring into the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program is a familiar sight. But the organization’s impact extends far beyond when the decorations come done.
Salvation Army Major Ken Chapman told News 6 that 60% of their income for the entire year is raised during November and December. For every dollar raised, 83 cents goes directly toward critical services.
“We have a slogan that says, ‘Need knows no season,’” Chapman said. “Yes, everybody gives us attention in November and December, but January on, it’s just as bad, and we’re out there every day on the front lines trying to make this a better community.”
Chapman reports the demand for their services in Central Florida has grown significantly, with a 38% increase over the past year. For many, the Salvation Army is more than just a charity; it’s a lifeline.

“Any day of the year, we have 300 beds of shelter — just in Orlando alone — filled by the Salvation Army,” Chapman explained. “And 1,000 meals a day, every day, come out of the Salvation Army kitchens.”
Beyond providing basic needs like shelter and meals, the Salvation Army runs transformative programs like Pathway of Hope. The initiative focuses on financial literacy, credit repair, and life skills training to empower individuals and families.
Chapman shared the program’s broader goals: “Once you reach a certain level with (Pathway of Hope), we move you to Pathway to Housing, so then we’re helping you get ready to close on a house. If you give people just a little bit of hope, they go the next step.”
The results of these programs are tangible. In the past three weeks alone, three families in Osceola County transitioned from homelessness to homeownership.
“That brings people dignity,” Chapman said. “That brings productive citizens who are paying taxes, who are participating in the community. This is the way to get through homelessness.”
The Salvation Army’s holistic approach demonstrates that while their holiday efforts are crucial, their work throughout the year is truly changing lives and helping Central Floridians make ends meet.
