Habitat for Humanity, volunteers gift playhouses to Central Florida families for holiday season

More than 20 playhouses built

TAVARES, Fla. – Habitat for Humanity is usually known for building forever homes, but this time the houses are a little smaller.

Habitat Lake and Sumter, along with several small businesses and groups from across Lake and Sumter counties, built playhouses to give to families this Christmas.

Dozens of volunteers came together to build more than 20 playhouses.

Each house is personalized for a specific child and for the Broughton family, a castle complete with costumes was the obvious choice.

“OK, so the closer we saw, I wasn’t sure, and then the closer we walked to it, I was like, ‘There’s no way that’s the one,’ and when they announced it, I’m astonished,” said Elexis Broughton.

Broughton’s daughters are recipients of a brand new castle playhouse.

The Broughtons also live in a home built by Habitat.

“Building our forever home has already changed our lives, and now, it’s the sprinkle on top,” Broughton said.

The castle was built by Kevco Builders. President and Owner Ian Kaneshie said they love participating in this event for Habitat.

“It’s always great watching the kids enjoy it,” Kaneshie said. “Watching them walk up to the playhouse exactly the way it is and it’s what they’re looking for is such a joy.”

The castle playhouse was not only a source of joy today for the Broughton family, but will be for many years to come.

“We can’t top that,” Broughton said. “That’s great. That’s amazing. That’s yeah, that’s the highest we get for that. That they will always remember this Christmas.”
