Orange County mosquito control truck stolen during waterway inspection, officials say

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A 36-year-old man out of jail on an active felony bond was arrested after stealing an Orange County mosquito control truck while an employee was inspecting a waterway on Monday morning, according to authorities.

Mario Powers, 36, of Sarasota, was arrested Monday in Seminole County on grand theft, drug and other charges.

Officials with Orange County Health Services said the incident happened around 9:15 a.m. Monday on Oberry Hoover Road in east Orange County.

According to a news release, the Orange County Mosquito Control employee exited the truck to perform routine mosquito activity checks on a ditch in the area.

Officials said while the employee checked the ditch, an unidentified man rode up on an electric bicycle and stole the truck. The bike was left at the scene, and the employee was not injured.

Later, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office was notified that the truck had been spotted in Brevard County and was headed into Seminole County.

Stop Sticks were used on the truck, and Powers was arrested after driving recklessly, officials said.

Powers was found with drugs, believed to be meth, in the truck, officials said. He was arrested without incident.

An investigation is ongoing.
