SANFORD, Fla. – A man was shot and killed Tuesday night in the parking lot of a Best Buy in Sanford, according to police, who continue to search for clues in the case.
Officers responded around 8 p.m. to 1501 Rinehart Road, where they found Terance Darnell Pope, 21, injured in the parking lot. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Sanford police held a news conference on Wednesday about the shooting, seeking help in the case.
“Right now, we do not have a lot of information on this investigation. We know that he was in that parking lot. We don’t know why. We don’t know if he was a patron of the store. We don’t know if something occurred on the roadway and ended there,” a Sanford police spokeswoman said. “We are investigating all those possibilities.”
Police said they have a few leads, but it’s not known if the shooting was a targeted attack.
“It’s a busy time of year. It’s the shopping season just before the holidays at a major complex of stores. We know that there had to be people in that area that saw something, so we are imploring the pubic to please contact the Sanford Police Department,” police said.
Police said detectives are checking to see if surveillance cameras captured the shooting, but there currently is no description of a suspected shooter or vehicle.
News 6 confirmed that Pope, of DeBary, played college football at Davenport University in Michigan. According to his player bio, Pope was on the roster for the 2021, 2022, and 2023 seasons. He played high school football at University High School in Orange City.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the police department or Crimeline at 800-423-8477.
