OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – Osceola County will send out warnings later this month from a new automated safety program designed to crackdown on speeding in school zones.

Speed cameras have been installed at 32 high-risk locations near schools, and on Jan. 31, a 30-day warning period began for vehicles found traveling in excess of 10 mph over the speed limit during school hours.

On March 3, which is after the warning period, a $100 fine will be mailed out to vehicles speeding through the school zones.

James Cannon’s children go to Parkway Middle School, which is near one of the camera locations, and he supports the program.

“They’re going fast. We need more (safety) for the kids,” Cannon said. “The warning’s going to tell you if you’re doing the same thing next time. It’s going to be money from your pocket.”

Osceola County contracted with Verra Mobility to administer the safety program.

After receiving secure images of vehicle license plates, law enforcement will verify the infraction before a fine is issued, officials said.

According to Verra Mobility, data collected from its programs showed that nearly 70% of people who received a road safety program citation did not receive a second.

“Implementing speed cameras in school zones has been proven to reduce crashes and pedestrian-related injuries,” Osceola County Commission Chair Viviana Janer said. “We all have a role to play in keeping our children safe, especially as they go to and from school. Working together as a community we can help make our roads safer.”
