‘An honest life:’ Orlando World War II veteran turns 100, shares his story

Harold Gross served under General Patton

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando VA Healthcare System hosted a heartwarming celebration on Friday to honor a true American hero.

Army Veteran Harold B. Gross, a World War II veteran, marked his 100th birthday in an event filled with gratitude, recognition, and reflection.

The celebration took place at the Community Living Center, where VA and congressional leaders presented Mr. Gross with a special certificate and a commemorative coin to recognize his incredible service and sacrifice. Born in Germany, raised in the Caribbean, and later settling in Detroit, Michigan, Gross has lived a life spanning a century of remarkable history.

Reflecting on his time in the military, Gross shared his experience serving under the legendary General George S. Patton in the Third Army. “It was a tremendous amount of exercise I got in the service. Big time,” Gross said, recounting his days of service with pride.

When asked to share advice with younger generations, his words were both practical and profound. “Smoking is a no-no,” he quipped, admitting he quit smoking after realizing its effects on his health. He also encouraged prioritizing rest and avoiding excessive partying with alcohol.

Perhaps his most poignant reflection came when asked what he’s most thankful for after 100 years of life.

“Leading an honest life, a peaceful life, and a God-fearing life,” he said, summing up a century of wisdom in just a few words.

Gross’s remarkable journey and enduring spirit serve as an inspiration to all who meet him. His legacy is a living testament to resilience, service, and the values that define the greatest generation.
