Would you pay more to avoid I-4 traffic jams? Here’s the timeline for ‘dynamic’ tolls

Dynamic tolls launch Monday

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Florida Department of Transportation is changing to dynamic tolling along I-4 Express.

Since its launch in 2022, tolls along the 21-mile stretch have been at a fixed rate but on Monday, FDOT will shift to a system that adjusts toll rates in response to real-time traffic conditions.

Orlando District 5 Commissioner Shan Rose posted a message on social media about the change after she said she was sent a letter from FDOT.

“The posted toll rates on segments of I-4 Express will change throughout the day as needed, with the goal of keeping vehicles moving at a minimum of 50 mph,” the message said.

The change could mean higher toll rates during busier times on the interstate when drivers typically see traffic delays.

FDOT said I-4 Express was designed to operate with dynamic tolls which prevent congestion and maintain reliable travel times.

“The use of dynamic tolling has been successful on other managed lanes in Florida, including 95 Express in South Florida,” FDOT said.

Drivers who learned about the change had mixed feelings on possibly paying more for using the express lanes.

“It probably won’t stop me because I think time is money and I rather be able to not be stuck in traffic,” Jennifer Ramsay said. “I do see everybody is struggling right now, so surge pricing will affect a lot of people.”
