DAVENPORT, Fla. – A 4-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition on Friday after accidentally shooting himself with a handgun that he found in the family vehicle, according to Davenport police.
Officers responded around 6:30 p.m. to AdventHealth Heart of Florida in Haines City, the Davenport Police Department said in a news release. The boy’s parents had driven him there after he entered the family vehicle while preparing for an evening outing, found a hidden handgun, and accidentally shot himself, the release states.
Upon arriving, the boy was airlifted in critical condition to a hospital in Orlando, police said, adding the parents were cooperating with investigators and their names were not to be released at this time.
“This is a heartbreaking incident. We are praying this child recovers from his injuries, and we equally pray for the family as they work through this tragedy,” Davenport police Chief Steve Parker said in a statement.
