Eatonville resident receives much-reeded home renovations through community grant

Restoration efforts highlight nonprofit’s commitment during Black History Month

EATONVILLE, Fla. – Eatonville, a historic Black town, is witnessing a small but significant transformation as a longtime homeowner benefits from a grant aimed at restoring old homes.

Miss Louis Billy, who has resided in her Eatonville home for two decades, is the fortunate recipient of this grant, provided by the nonprofit organization Rebuilding Together Central Florida. This initiative is part of a broader effort to revitalize the community as they celebrate Black History Month.

“It’s a blessing because I can look at it every day and say I’m enjoying it,” Billy said.

The grant facilitated essential repairs, including a new roof and renovations to her bathroom and kitchen. During the process, an inspection revealed mold behind her kitchen cabinets, which was promptly addressed to prevent potential health hazards.

Eatonville, incorporated in 1887 by newly freed slaves, is strategically located near Winter Park.

State Rep. Anna Eskamani, D-Orlando, has been actively volunteering to enhance the neighborhood’s aesthetics. She emphasizes the importance of revitalizing communities without displacing residents, advocating for collective improvements that involve the community rather than external forces.

“It’s really important that we, of course, revitalize our communities and invest in them.” Rep. Eskamani said. “There are ways to do it where you’re not pushing people out, you’re helping to work with the community so that the revitalization and improvements are done collectively, not just by outsiders.”

Billy’s sentiments echo the community’s appreciation for the initiative.

“I am grateful. I am truly grateful,” she said.

Her neighbor was able to get some repairs done to her home as well, from a separate grant through the same organization.

This restoration project not only enhances the living conditions of individual homeowners but also strengthens the community’s fabric, ensuring that Eatonville’s rich history and cultural significance are preserved for future generations.
