LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – Long & Scott Farms, a well-known Lake County staple for more than 60 years, is preparing to relocate as its 700-acre property is under contract for development. Despite the sale, owner Hank Scott emphasizes that the farm is not closing but moving to a more rural area to continue operations.
“We’ve identified land for a 1031 exchange, so we’re not quitting,” Scott said. “We’re going to keep farming—it’s just going to be in a different area.”

Scott said the transition is expected to take about two years, and the farm will remain open in its current location during that time.
The sale includes plans for residential development, a golf course, and conservation space. However, Lake County Commissioner Anthony Sabatini is working to explore ways to preserve the farmland.
“This is the most iconic farm in our community,” Sabatini said in a statement. “We’re looking forward to discussing ways to help protect our historic agricultural landmarks in Central Florida.”
Sabatini has asked county staff to explore a conservation easement, which would allow Scott to continue farming while maintaining the land’s agricultural use. Scott has indicated he is open to discussions if the county can match the current offer.
Scott acknowledges the area is becoming more developed and says the move will allow the farm to continue thriving in a less crowded setting.
“This area is getting more congested,” he said. “We’re moving somewhere with more open space, a little more rural.”
Scott reassured the community that Long & Scott Farms will remain operational and accessible to visitors, even after the relocation.
“We’re still here for another year and a half to two years,” he said. “Even after that, we’ll be close by, and people can continue visiting and enjoying what we do.”
The Lake County Commission is expected to discuss the sale during the regular commission meeting in Tavares, which starts at 9 a.m. Tuesday. The Sabatini proposal is the last thing listed on the agenda, available on the Lake County website.
