Love hurts: Ways to avoid romance schemes

Watch Breakfast with Bridgett interview at the top of this story

ORLANDO, Fla. – Cybersecurity expert Lynette Owens from Trend Micro explained some of the latest tricks scammers are using to take advantage of people looking for love connections.

According to their recent data collections, many consumers who’ve been scammed are suffering in silence.

Sixty-four percent of those surveyed believe victims are easily fooled, which isn’t necessarily the case. Owens says many scams are organized and using technology to weave a web of lies.

“This does target people of all ages. You really should have that conversation. There’s too much of a stigma around this particular issue. We did a study with 6,000 consumers and not a very big majority were willing to report if it had happened to them,” Owens said.

To detect imposters, Owens recommends have a secret code with family and use scam check that can even detect AI generated face or voice swapping technology.
