The Wekiva Paint Out has returned, bringing together artists and nature enthusiasts at Wekiva Island and Wekiwa Springs State Park.

This annual event, running from Feb. 24 - March 1, combines the beauty of the natural environment with the creativity of plein air painting, all while raising funds for local nonprofits dedicated to preserving the Wekiva River.

Robin Roberts, one of the participating artists, shared his thoughts on the unique nature of the event.

“I’m tweaking a couple of paintings that I did yesterday for various reasons. Lost the light or whatever,” he said. “This is a great event because it is a paint out, not a competition. A lot of these plein air outings are competitions.”

Roberts emphasized the camaraderie among artists.

“We stay at the state park. All the artists are all together in the state park, at the youth camp. And so it kind of breeds camaraderie,” he said.

The event not only showcases artistic talent but also highlights the importance of environmental conservation. Mary Sue Weinaug, the event’s organizer and executive director of Keep Seminole Beautiful, explained the week’s purpose.

“We want to keep the river clean, and having people come down here and see the river and embrace it makes them appreciate it and want to keep it clean,” she said. “It’s a fundraiser. It’s going on today and tomorrow. Tomorrow’s last day. It’s been going on all week.”

The Wekiva Paint Out offers different activities for visitors, including a live auction, evening nocturne painting, and a Quick Draw amateur competition. The event culminates in an all-inclusive gala on March 1, featuring a curated meal, drinks, and a riverside atmosphere.

“We have tables with linens and chairs set up out here. Real silverware. We have Life on Mars plan. And it’s inclusive, all inclusive, a food, beverage and the music,” Weinaug said.

Proceeds from the event benefit Keep Seminole Beautiful and the Wekiva Wilderness Trust, both of which work to protect the river for future generations.
