Cardio, strength training linked to lower cancer mortality

ORLANDO, Fla. – A report released earlier this year from the British Medical Journal found an association between strength training and cardio fitness to an up to 46% lower risk of death for cancer patients.

Planet Fitness Trainer Alissa Mosca says the benefits of exercise at any skill or ability level can help build strength and resilience from within.

She says members have shared that they believe their fitness routines are helping them better recover from treatments like chemotherapy and dialysis.

“Just overall health in general, but especially when it comes to someone dealing with cancer. When you focus on things like increasing your muscle mass, your strength, that makes your body a little more resilient to handling diseases. It helps regulate things like your metabolism, inflammation, and immune function. Strength training can also help with insulin sensitivity,” she said.

“Strength training also helps regulate your hormones and keep them balanced, which helps reduce the risk of obesity, enhances your treatment tolerance to chemo. Things like chemo, they stress and fatigue your muscles and you start to experience muscle loss.”
