Man accused in robbery-turned-shootout while drugs handed off in Orlando parking garage

D’Jon Heyliger, 32, accused of attempted murder

D’Jon Heyliger, 32 (Orange County Corrections)

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A man who was held in jail as Orlando police first investigated his alleged role in a robbery-turned-shootout last month has been arrested to face new charges, records show.

D’Jon Heyliger, 32, faces charges of attempted murder with a firearm, robbery with a firearm and discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle, an affidavit for his arrest warrant states. He had originally been arrested in early February to face two charges of resisting an officer without violence, for which he posted bond about two weeks later, according to the Orange County Clerk of Court.

Heyliger is one of seven people whom Orlando police say coordinated the Feb. 4 robbery on the fourth floor of a parking garage in the 400 block of N. Orange Avenue.

While three males carried large boxes to a white Tesla sedan around 1:52 a.m. that day, Heyliger and two others arrived in a white Hyundai Tucson which trailed behind a blue Acura sedan, the affidavit states. The occupants of the Acura challenged the three males at gunpoint, prompting the trio to run away while Heyliger and the two he rode with assisted in retrieving the boxes, as well as a backpack which police say Heyliger was seen carrying away on surveillance video, police said.

The three males returned with guns and began shooting at the alleged robbers, what police said started a shootout between them and the occupants of the Acura. Heyliger also fired a gun during the shootout, doing so from the rear passenger’s seat of the Tucson, according to the affidavit.

The Tucson fled the parking garage and the Acura ascended to the fifth floor before its occupants switched over to a black Tesla — which was waiting for them, with a driver — that then also left, police said.

Police responding to the shooting were told to be on the lookout for the Tucson, which was later located and stopped in the area of W. Robinson Street and Beggs Avenue, the affidavit states. Two of the Tucson’s three occupants ran away and were apprehended while the third occupant stayed behind and was later verified to have been driving the vehicle, police said. Heyliger was among the pair that attempted to flee, according to the affidavit.

After a search warrant was obtained for the Tucson, detectives found a box containing 16 pounds of vacuum-sealed marijuana, as well as an additional pound in the backpack that Heyliger is accused of stealing, the affidavit states.

The manner in which the robbery was committed showed planning and coordination between seven suspects and that they had beforehand knowledge that a large amount of cannabis was being transported at a specific date and time. The seven suspects arrived in three different vehicles, were prepared with firearms, and used clothing to conceal their identities.

During Heyliger’s initial arrest, he allegedly said that he was “the one who they’re trying to (expletive) kill.” He reporteldy went on to refuse to identify himself or speak with police before complaining of a medical issue, being taken first to ORMC and second to the Orange County jail upon being cleared at the hospital.

Heyliger was booked again Friday to face his latest charges, records show.
