COLLEGE PARK, Fla. – A local barbershop and an attorney partnered up Sunday for a new monthly event set to provide free haircuts for kids in need.

Several organizations and businesses across Central Florida are stepping up to support families in need, providing essentials like food, new clothes, and even fresh haircuts for kids.

With many Central Floridian families facing financial challenges, Makk’s Barber Parlor and local attorney Geoff Moore, co-founder of Moore Payne Law, have teamed up to offer free haircuts to kids every month.

Andrea Elmellouki brought her two boys to Makk’s Barber Parlor in Orlando’s College Park neighborhood to get their hair cut on Sunday.

“We require haircuts every three weeks and it’s a lot, it’s a lot,” Elmellouki said.

She said opportunities like this are super helpful for her family.

“It’s definitely very helpful to get support from the community and any time we can cut a corner in today’s financial situation it’s great,” Elmellouki said.

According to United Way of North Central Florida, despite earning more, 46% of Floridians were living paycheck to paycheck in 2022.

“If you can’t put food on the table, you’re not going to pay for a haircut,” Geoff Moore said. “You’re going to have to find some other alternative. Unfortunately with the way things are with the economy right now, not every family has that opportunity to — and they’re struggling to do things they have to do for their family and they can’t do things like this, get a barbershop haircut for their kids.”

While it might seem small, a fresh haircut can have a significant impact.

“You know a haircut is very important for confidence, self-esteem and confidence in a kid and having a good haircut kind of sets you up for success in the long run,” said Robert Cisneros, a barber at Makk’s Barber Parlor.

If you’re interested in signing up your kids for a free haircut in the coming months, you can message Moore Payne Law on Facebook or Instagram with your child’s information to reserve a spot.
