OCOEE, Fla. – Ocoee police honored a man who helped detain a man accused of attacking and ultimately killing a woman outside of a Planet Fitness last year.

Officers were called around 7:30 a.m. on March 1, 2024, to a disturbance in the parking lot of the gym at 10908 W. Colonial Drive.

Jessica L. Steigelman, of Winter Garden, was found unresponsive and gravely injured on the ground while the bystanders were holding the suspect, identified ad Shannon W. King, 55, of Orlando.

Police said King was held at the scene by Darren Fink and another good Samaritan before officers arrived.

Steigelman was taken to a hospital, where she died, police said.

On Tuesday, Ocoee police honored Fink with the Chief’s Special Award for his actions in helping detain the suspect.

“Mr. Fink pulled the attacker off the woman and restrained him until the police arrived, while the other gentleman provided life-saving aid,” Ocoee police said in a statement.
