According to investigators, the six suspects were involved in “a long-term criminal enterprise” operating throughout the state, stealing vehicles that were then assigned fraudulent VINs, titles and tags.
The group would then transfer or sell the stolen cars, investigators added.
Per Thursday’s release, the group would frequently steal the vehicles from rental companies, either at the rental location itself or after someone had already rented them.
On several occasions, investigators found Apple AirTags in the stolen cars, which allowed the group to track the car after it left the rental location, the release explains.
“The effects of illegal immigration go far beyond what meets the eye,” FLHSMV Director Dave Kerner said. “I’m proud of our Florida Highway Patrol Criminal Interdiction Unit Troopers for their great investigative work. The outcome of this case demonstrates the power of partnerships and Florida’s focus on criminal and illegal immigration enforcement.”
