ORLANDO, Fla. – Student families hopeful to attend Jones High School’s upcoming graduation ceremony — yet unpleased with what they call a distant choice for a venue — can look forward to some help in the form of an Uber voucher, according to Orlando District 5 City Commissioner Shan Rose.

Rose on Friday shared the news on social media, announcing she had met with Uber and secured a code that’s good for $15 off two trips each with the ride-hailing service, a $30 value in total.

The commissioner said she acted in response to the recent announcement that Jones’ senior class is expected to attend their graduation ceremony in May at Addition Financial Arena on UCF’s campus — some 17 miles away from the high school — as opposed to the nearby Kia Center in Orlando, where the ceremony has been held in past years.

“After I learned the Jones High School graduation would not be held at the Kia Center, I fought to get my District 5 families assistance to celebrate this momentous occasion!” Rose wrote Friday.

According to a spokesperson for Orange County Public Schools, the decision was made based on the availability of the venue and the size of the graduating class, not the distance. It was made a priority to have classes from schools such as Jones graduate at Addition Financial Arena so that other graduates and their families could bring as many guests as possible to the larger Kia Center, the spokesperson said.

Rose’s post instructed student families to download the Uber app, go to the account section, tap on “Wallet,” scroll down to “Add Voucher Code” and enter JONESGRAD25.

The voucher will only be valid between 5 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. on May 30 and is good for a maximum of $15 per redemption for a maximum of two trips.
