MOUNT DORA, Fla. – While most people slow down with age, Milton “Mike” Chewning is proving that 100 is just a number.
The World War II and Korean War veteran, Purple Heart recipient, and avid tennis player still hits the courts three times a week—and he’s not just playing, he’s winning.
Chewning, who has been playing tennis since the 1960s, meets with the Lincoln Street Senior Friends at the Mount Dora tennis courts, where his quick footwork and sharp backhand continue to impress.

“It just feels great,” Chewning said when asked about turning 100. “I’m enjoying it. I feel good.”
His secret to staying active? A love for competition and a strong support system.
“To begin with, I had a good wife—we were married for 75 years. She was a big part of my life,” he shared. “And I stay active. I like competition.”
A former Navy pilot, Chewning hasn’t let anything slow him down—not even a century of life. His fellow players admire his energy, both on and off the court.
“His skill at playing bridge is also one to behold,” one friend joked. “With all his activities, he still doesn’t act old!”
As for his advice for longevity? “Just keep active. Keep doing what you want to do.”
Chewning’s milestone birthday is a testament to living life to the fullest—one serve at a time.
