OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. – Osceola County’s school zone speed safety program has entered a new phase, and what began as a 30-day warning period will now introduce citations, fines and more cameras.
Fifteen cameras were installed in Phase 1, which began in late February and lasted to Friday, March 21, the county said in a news release. In that time — during which drivers were to be sent warnings in the mail after being caught traveling more than 10 mph over the speed limit in a school zone during school hours, as well as half an hour before and after — more than 5,600 warnings were issued, the release states.
For Phase 2, 17 new cameras will be installed. Speeders caught by the new cameras will start to get their warning notices while those caught by the 15 cameras which were installed previously will now be issued a citation and sent a $100 fine, according to the release.
When a vehicle exceeds the threshold limit during school hours, a photograph is taken of the vehicle. A second photograph is taken as the vehicle passes the detection zone to record the vehicle’s license plate. The date, time, speed, and location of the infraction is recorded on the digital image.
The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office reviews each incident before issuing a citation. The citation will contain vehicle images and a close-up of the license plate.
