Man accused in shooting that left woman, her 3 sons dead in Florida

Stephen McKenzie, 34, hospitalized amid pending charges

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – A mother and her three sons were killed Wednesday evening in a South Florida shooting that also left her daughter and the apparent shooter in the hospital, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

In a news release, deputies said they received a call about the shooting at 7:36 p.m. at a home along West Hallandale Beach Boulevard in Pembroke Park, leading to a huge response from law enforcement.

Deputies said they found six people in the home who had been shot.

They were identified as follows:

  • Julie Cruz, 32 — Mother of the four shot children
  • Xion Solomon, 11 — Son of Julie Cruz
  • Nova McKenzie, 2 — Son of Julie Cruz
  • Emery McKenzie, 2 — Son of Julie Cruz
  • Phiinyx Solomon, 8 — Daughter of Julie Cruz
  • Stephen McKenzie, 34 — Suspect

According to deputies, Julie Cruz and her three sons died from their injuries.

Stephen McKenzie appeared to have shot himself, deputies said.

Phiinyx Solomon, the 8-year-old daughter of Cruz, and Stephen McKenzie were taken to the hospital for treatment, the release states.

“The investigation revealed (Julie) Cruz and (Stephen) McKenzie shared two sons, Nova and Emery McKenzie, who are deceased,” the release reads. “Cruz’s son, Xion Solomon, who is also deceased, and daughter Phiinyx Solomon, have a different father.”

Investigators added that Stephen McKenzie was in custody at the hospital, and charges against him are pending.
