TAVARES, Fla. – Dozens of children in Lake County swapped their electronic devices for fishing poles this weekend during a free fishing clinic designed to connect young anglers with nature.
Hosted at the Hickory Point Recreational Complex in Tavares, the Lake County Parks and Water Resources event gave kids as young as four a chance to learn the basics of fishing—from baiting hooks to identifying local fish species. Organizers said the clinic aimed to foster a love for Florida’s waterways while encouraging kids to unplug from technology.
“I think this is a great opportunity for all these kids,” said Birdie Zenishik, a parent. “From your youngest at four to your oldest at 15—we’re outside, on the water, in the fresh air. Kids aren’t stuck on a tablet or phone, which is huge.”
The hands-on clinic emphasized conservation practices and featured teen volunteers who shared their passion for the outdoors.
“Oh, I’m really hoping they enjoy it and get the same fire I have to be outside and fish,” said Tommy Rust, a teen volunteer. “That’s why we’re teaching them early—how to tie knots, use bait, and really just connect with the environment.”
The first 30 children who attended the clinic received free fishing poles and tackle boxes to continue practicing their skills. Organizers said parent and guardian participation was a key part of the experience, turning the morning into a bonding opportunity for families.
“I think it’s the relationship,” said parent Sherrell Wilson. “It was something my dad and I did a lot, so I wanted to make sure I paid that forward to my son. Hopefully, the legacy continues.”
