COCOA BEACH, Fla. – A 12-year-old boy was airlifted to an Orlando hospital after he was injured, not by a shark or sea creature, but by a surfboard, Brevard County Fire Rescue said on Monday.

The incident happened Sunday afternoon off Cocoa Beach.

BCFR said on Sunday that the boy was injured by “some kind of bite” before clarifying a day later that the boy’s injury was “caused by a fin on his surfboard.”

The boy suffered a laceration to his knee and was pulled from the water by Brevard County lifeguards, who applied a tourniquet.

He was then airlifted to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.
