SANFORD, Fla. – Could chickens soon come home to roost in backyards around Sanford?
City officials tell News 6 that they’re getting input from surrounding cities to come up with best practices for a backyard chicken program.

City commissioners will get an update during the next work session on April 28 at city hall at 4 p.m.
Currently, Sanford city code does not allow people to keep chickens within 150 feet of any dwelling, house, apartment, or garage apartment.
If someone lives far enough away from other people, they are allowed to keep chickens within 25 feet of a home.
More cities and counties have considered adding backyard chicken programs around Central Florida as egg prices in grocery stores continue to rise.
Other cities are looking at revising existing policies. That’s the case in Winter Springs, which will vote next month to add some oversight measures to the program.
