Man with gun shot, killed by Orlando officers after fight breaks out in downtown, police say

Suspect identified as 38-year-old Johnathan Angel Flores

ORLANDO, Fla. – A man with a gun was shot and killed early Sunday by officers after a fight broke out in downtown Orlando, according to the police department.

The Orlando Police Department said a fight broke out around 1:30 a.m. outside Thrive Cocktail Lounge & Eatery.

Detectives with the department’s Crime Center were monitoring the area and saw a gun fall out of the man’s pants before he picked it up and put it back into his pants, according to police. The detectives notified nearby police officers of the weapon and as they were responding, police said the man pulled out the gun and shot once into the air.

According to the department, officers told the man – later identified as 38-year-old Johnathan Angel Flores – multiple times to drop the weapon and when he did not follow the commands, the officers shot at the man.

Flores was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The officers involved in the shooting were not injured and will be placed on administrative leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducts its investigation of the shooting.

No other information has been released.

An investigation is ongoing.
