MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a major toll relief proposal Wednesday that would give Florida commuters using SunPass or E-ZPass a 50% discount for an entire year.
The program, which requires legislative approval, would apply to any commuter within the state that uses these transponders and passes through at least 40 tolls a month, DeSantis said at the news briefing held at the Florida Department of Transportation District 6 Headquarters in Miami-Dade County.

“If you are a bona fide commuter, you’re getting a 50% discount in your tolls for the entire year. And that’s going to make a difference. This will save the average commuter throughout the state of Florida $550 over the course of the year,” he said.
If passed, the proposal would apply to all toll roads across the state and run from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024.
“You know, there were so many people who, when COVID hit, they had the luxury of just working on their laptop in their pajamas at home, and that’s fine. I mean, if your... job allows you to do that, but you know, you have these these cops, these firefighters, nurses. They’ve got to go and be there in person, and they’ve got to go and there’s no way they can avoid these tolls. So they get hit with it every single day,” DeSantis said.
Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez and FDOT Secretary Jared Perdue were also in attendance at the news conference to support the latest toll relief proposal.
“This proposal will bring more relief to more people across all toll facilities in the state of Florida. So, we’re tremendously excited about this,” Perdue said.

This comes nearly two weeks after DeSantis announced a six-month SunPass toll rebate program that launched on Sept. 1. The SunPass Savings Program credits drivers a portion of the cost for a certain amount of tolls per month on most FDOT and Turnpike-operated toll roads.
