According to its text, the bill would cancel the filings of any political parties whose platforms previously supported slavery or involuntary servitude.

Under the bill, state officials would provide notice to members of any parties “canceled” in this way to inform them of the cancellation.

In that case, the member’s political affiliation would then become “No Party Affiliation,” and state officials would have to provide procedures to the member on how to update their affiliation to an active party, the bill reads.

Any parties canceled this way will be allowed to reregister with the Department of State under a “substantially different” name from any other party previously registered with the department, the bill says.

Furthermore, the party wouldn’t be allowed to submit its registration filing any later than six months before any election in which the registering party wants to nominate candidates for office, according to the bill.

Historically, the Democratic Party had several platforms built around supporting slavery in 1840, 1844, 1856 and 1860.

If passed, the act would take effect on July 1.
