ORLANDO, Fla – I-4 as “Kessel Run?”
Grand Canyon as “Sarlacc Pit?”
This is the way Florida Rep. Anna Eskamani is responding to the so-called “Gulf of America” bill that’s making its way through the Florida Legislature.
Taking to X on Thursday, the Orlando native announced that she has filed an amendment to rename the Gulf of Mexico, along with other landmarks, after places in “Star Wars.”
“If we’re renaming things, we might as well go to a galaxy far far away,” said Eskamani.
The Democrat — who represents District 42 — also shared photos of the committee/subcommittee amendment document to HB 575, which lists all the name replacements.
- “Gulf of America” as “Gulf of Endor”
- “Mississippi River” as “Dagobah Current”
- “Grand Canyon” as “Sarlacc Pit”
- “Florida Everglades” as “Naboo Marshlands”
- “Great Lakes” as “Mon Cala Seas”
- “Las Vegas” as “Mos Eisley”
- “Alaska” as “Hoth”
- “Washington D.C. “ as “Galactic Senate”
- “I-4″ as “Kessel Run”
Last week, SB 608 was approved 4-3 during a Senate committee meeting, shortly after a similar bill (HB 575) was approved in a House committee.
If approved, the bill will take effect on July 1.
This morning we’ll be hearing a bill to rename “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America”… so I have filed an amendment to rename the Gulf alongside other landmarks after places in Star Wars!
