39 years ago: How weather played a role in Space Shuttle Challenger disaster

Hey there Insiders! It’s meteorologist Samara Cokinos here with you. I clearly recall being in elementary school here in central Florida when the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster happened.

I was very little, so I didn’t understand why our teachers rushed us back into the classroom that day. We always got to watch the launches outside and our teachers would turn it into a science lesson.

When the Space Shuttle Challenger launched on January 28, 1986, the weather was far from ideal. A Polar Vortex breakdown is about to happen - what does that mean for us?

Welcome back to your Pinpoint Newsletter! This is meteorologist David Nazario with a quick update on the winter season that Florida has long since forgotten. Yes, the polar vortex and all that cold weather we once faced in the midst of January are still alive and well.

However, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to get some of that cooler air down into Central Florida. You won’t believe the high temps we’re pinpointing next week, with some areas breaching above 85 degrees! As we wander into the middle portions of February, we won’t be the only ones continuing to warm as what’s called a “stratospheric warming event” gets underway. This will aid in breaking down the continuous sphere of cold air in the poles and basically split the polar vortex in two. One separate spin is likely to migrate into central and eastern Canada, helping drive fresh polar and arctic air into the United States.
