It’s spring! Time to spruce up our yards.

Did you put that right plant in the right place? Is your lawn company -- or are you, fertilizing responsibly? Are you following the Fertilizer Ordinance requirements in your county or city?

Seminole County enacted in 2017 a Fertilizer Ordinance to minimize excess fertilizer runoff and protect the county’s natural water resources.

Homeowners can have a beautiful yard and also help protect our waterways by following these simple tips:

1. Fertilize wise.

Do not apply any fertilizer containing nitrogen (N) between June 1 and Sept. 30. If needed, use fertilizers with potassium (K), iron (Fe), Magnesium (Mg), Manganese (Mn) and other micronutrients, often called “summer blends.”

2. Know slow.

During the non-restricted season (Oct-May), use only fertilizer that contains 65% or more slow release nitrogen (SRN).

3. Know how much.

4. Be phosphorus free.

Do not use fertilizers that contain any phosphorus (P) on your lawn. Look for fertilizer that have “0″ in the middle (example 15-0-15).

5. Be aware of a buffer zone.

Do not apply any fertilizer within 15 feet of any body of water or wetland.
