TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Former UCF head football coach Gus Malzahn is now offensive coordinator for the Florida State Seminoles and he says he’ll be able to get back to doing what he loves — actually coaching.

Malzahn spoke to reporters in Tallahassee Wednesday for the first time since resigning from the Knights and taking the job at FSU under head coach Mike Norvell.

The Knights finished this season 4-8 while missing a bowl appearance and finished with a second straight losing season under Malzahn, who announced his resignation in late November.

On Wednesday, Malzahn said the job of head coach has changed dramatically in the last two years, and it’s made it hard to be an “old school football coach.”

“The transfer portal to collectives to agents and everything that goes with that,” Malzahn said. “You know, I’m just an old school football coach. Man, I love coaching football, and you know, head coaches, it’s hard to do that.”

Malzahn also has a history with Norvell while working at the University of Tulsa.

“We’re really close, you know, and I’m just really excited to be back with him,” Malzahn said. “We were really good together.”

UCF re-introduced Scott Frost as its head football coach Sunday night, bringing back the man who led the team to an undefeated season in 2017 and set the program on its path to joining the Big 12.

News 6 Sports Director Jamie Seh asked Frost how it felt to be back.

It feels surreal,” Frost said. “It feels like it was 100 years ago and yesterday at the same time, you know, pulling back on campus, and I parked in the spot I parked in for two years.”

Frost, the 10th head coach in program history, led the Knights to a 19-7 record in his two seasons with UCF. He was originally hired on Dec. 1, 2015, and took UCF to a 12-0 season and American Athletic Conference Championship in his second season.

UCF officials said Frost and the university agreed on a five-year contract through the 2029 season.

In another throwback, UCF has since announced its new quarterbacks coach will be former UCF quarterback McKenzie Milton.
