CLEARWATER, Fla. – While Tampa Bay didn’t take a direct hit from Hurricane Helene, businesses, residents and attractions are feeling the impact of the storm.
According to posts on its social media channels, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) experienced over 4 feet of flooding during Helene, causing a loss of power and damage to vital equipment. Elevators, freezers, laundry machines, lab equipment, air compressors, and other essential tools were also lost or damaged.

While all animals are safe, the aquarium temporarily moved a pair of manatees and sea turtles to other locations in Florida out of an abundance of caution. Some animals were also moved within the facility.
As teams continue to provide daily animal care, they’re also working to assess the damage to get operations running again. The aquarium will remain closed until it can safely reopen.
Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a marine life hospital and relies heavily on the generosity of visitors and the global community. To help with animal care and recovery efforts, the non-profit set up a Hurricane Helen Recovery Fund so people can make donations.
