WASHINGTON – Federal authorities have charged four men in connection with a failed effort last week to pull down the statue of President Andrew Jackson near the White House. In a complaint unsealed Saturday, authorities allege that the men damaged and attempted to tear down the Jackson statue, which is located in Lafayette Square, last Monday. The square has been the site of protests in the aftermath of George Floyd's death while in police custody in Minneapolis. Judd was arrested on Friday and appeared in Superior Court of the District of Columbia on Saturday, authorities said. Judd is seen on video trying to pull down the statue while Lane is seen on video affixing a rope to one part of the statue and then pulling on another rope tied to the statue, the complaint alleges.

WASHINGTON Protesters tried to pull down a statue of President Andrew Jackson near the White House Monday night before being dispersed by police. WUSA-TV in Washington reported that police used pepper spray to move protesters out of Lafayette Square, where the Jackson statue is located. The statue shows Jackson in a military uniform, riding a horse that is rearing on its hind legs. The Jackson statue remained on its pedestal Monday night. On June 1, law enforcement officers forcefully cleared peaceful protesters from Lafayette Square so President Donald Trump could stage a photo op at a nearby church.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Slave Owner was scrawled in red paint across a statue of Andrew Jackson in Jacksonville on Monday, following a nationwide trend defacing monuments and statues with ties to slavery in the wake of racial protests. The prominent statue is located in the center of a busy traffic circle. Critics have said his legacy related to Native Americans were part of an ugly chapter in American history. The act comes as cities across the country are reconsidering long-held policies, practices, venue names and statues tied to slavery after the death of George Floyd. A fake Native American head was also placed on the monument at one point.

Trump had tweeted late Monday that those who tried to topple a statue of President Andrew Jackson in Lafayette Park across the street from the White House faced 10 years in prison under the Veterans Memorial Preservation Act. Jackson is one of Trump's favorite presidents.

And now Lafayette Square. Trump had briefly been forced to take shelter in the emergency White House bunker and flames had risen from St. Johns Church across from the executive mansion. Lafayette Square was ordered to be cleared. The White House quickly produced a slick ad celebrating the triumph. Some observers believe Trump may be able to cast aside Lafayette Square too.
