Ban on renter evictions during COVID-19 pandemic is extended
The Biden administration is extending a federal moratorium on evictions of tenants who've fallen behind on rent during the coronavirus pandemic. (AP Photo/Michael Dwyer, File)WASHINGTON โ The Biden administration is extending a federal moratorium on evictions of tenants who have fallen behind on rent during the coronavirus pandemic. AdIn February, President Joe Biden extended a ban on housing foreclosures to June 30 to help homeowners struggling during the pandemic. AdBut Pollock and other housing advocates were disappointed that Biden merely extended the ban without addressing several issues that put many tenants at risk of eviction. โIn Massachusetts, judges have green-lighted over 1,700 evictions under the federal eviction moratorium.
The eviction moratorium is expiring. What will Biden do?
Still, they argue the existing moratorium hasnโt been a blanket protection and say thousands of families have been evicted for other reasons beyond nonpayment of rent. Eric Dunn, director of litigation for the National Housing Law Project, noted signs that a decision has already quietly been made. โThe question is: What is the extension going to look like?โDunn and others would like to see the moratorium extended and improved. Bidenโs $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package included more than $25 billion in emergency rental assistance, plus more to help tenants who were behind on their utilities, but no extension of the eviction moratorium. One of the biggest changes being advocated is for Biden to make the ban's protection's automatic and universal.

Gretchen Whitmer traveled to Delaware last weekend to meet with Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee's first known in-person session with a potential running mate as he nears a decision. Whitmer visited Biden Sunday, according to two high-ranking Michigan Democrats who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. Biden is facing calls to select a Black woman to acknowledge their crucial role in Democratic politics and in response to the nation's reckoning with systemic racism. If Whitmer is chosen to join the ticket and Biden wins, Lt. Gov. Biden and Whitmer formed a bond after he campaigned for her in the 2018 gubernatorial election.

NEW YORK New York City and states that likewise seemed to have tamed their coronavirus outbreaks are hitting pause on some of their reopening plans because of the alarming surge in reported infections across the Sun Belt and other parts of the U.S. But the news we have gotten from around the country gets worse and worse all the time, he said. That is higher even than what the nation witnessed during the deadliest stretch of the crisis in mid-April through early May. Outbreaks in Florida, Arizona, Texas and California have already forced those states to backtrack and take such measures as shutting down bars and beaches and curbing restaurant capacity. Phil Murphy announced a pause on Monday, in part because of people not wearing masks and social distancing.
