A Florida man now faces a second-degree murder charge in the case of a missing woman whose toddler was found wandering alone in a parking lot last July.

The federal agency did not provide many details about the Leila Cavett investigation, including how they zeroed in on the Monarch Hill Landfill in Pompano Beach, the South Florida SunSentinel reported. Cavett is from Jasper, Alabama, and had lived in Atlanta before she went missing during a trip to South Florida. He has admitted to spending the day with her when she arrived in South Florida, but denies anything to do with her disappearance. Court documents say he is homeless and has no ties to South Florida, which makes him a flight risk. That day, Ryan used a debit card to make purchases at the RaceTrac gas station and Walmart, law enforcement officials say.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The FBI is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the location of 21-year-old Georgia mother Leila Cavett, whose young son was found wandering alone in a South Florida apartment complex last month. “We are still relentlessly investigating the circumstances surrounding her disappearance," FBI Miami Special Agent in Charge George L. Piro said in a news release on Thursday. “Any information, no matter how seemingly insignificant, may be important to finding Leila.”The agency also released video that contains seven clips of Cavett. The mother and son had arrived in South Florida the day before she went missing. Investigators on Saturday arrested Shannon Ryan, 38, and charged him with kidnapping with the intent of collecting a ransom, reward or other benefit.

Shanon Demar Ryan, 38, a self-proclaimed witch, appeared in federal court on Monday, at which time prosecutors asked that he remain behind bars before his trial. Police said surveillance video from the gas station does not show Ryan’s car at the pumps nor Cavett getting into a dark sedan. According to the complaint, Ryan tried to sell the truck to another man for $1,000. A gas station employee told detectives that they recalled Ryan using the RaceTrac dumpster and noticed children’s toys and women’s clothing inside it. While multiple posts regarding witchcraft have been posted to Ryan’s Facebook page, Curtis Cavett told Local 10 News that his daughter was not involved in witchcraft.

At the headquarters in Miramar, the FBI on Thursday showed images from surveillance video of the last few times Cavett was seen, which was three weeks ago. Detectives confirmed that the 21-year-old mother and her 2-year-old son were alone when they drove from Georgia in a white pickup truck south to Florida on July 24 and 25. The gas station is in the same plaza in Hollywood that the white pickup truck was found on Wednesday, July 29. Sightings of her in Hollywood, Miramar and Fort Lauderdale Beach have been confirmed. Her family is still puzzled as to why Cavett was in Florida.

The announcement came on Wednesday afternoon when the 21-year-old mother’s truck was located by Miramar police in Hollywood. Miramar police find the white truck that Leila Cavett was driving, but no sign of the missing mom. Now the missing woman’s mother, sisters, brother, and other family members, including her paternal grandparents and an uncle, have arrived in South Florida. The toddler went unclaimed for more than 24-hours until word spread to Alabama where Cavett’s family recognized the toddler on social media. One of Cavett’s sisters told Local 10: “I FaceTimed her on July 17.

MIRAMAR, Fla. – Three sisters drove from Alabama to South Florida to reunite with their 2-year-old nephew, who was found Sunday morning wandering alone in the parking lot of an apartment complex. “We just want to know that my sister is OK,” Gina Lewis told reporters Tuesday. The family said Cavett didn't have any known ties to South Florida. When Miramar police posted the boy's picture on social media, it went viral and his family spotted it online. Cavett’s family told reporters they last spoke to her about two weeks ago.
