Central Florida is set to recognize the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with several celebrations.

The year was 1964 when Dr Martin Luther King Jr., made his first and only stop to Orlando.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Wednesday unveiled its shortlists for several categories, including documentary feature, international feature, original song, original score, visual effects and makeup and hairstyling. Titles as diverse as “Tenet” (for score and visual effects), “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” (for the original song “Wuhan Flu”), “Eurovision Song Contest” (for song) and “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Story” (for score, song and makeup) are in the initial mix. The Korean American film “Minari," which was controversially nominated for a foreign language Golden Globe, was not eligible in the same category for the Oscars. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross could find themselves double nominees, as both “Soul” and “Mank” were shortlisted for original score. Winners will be announced at the 93rd Oscars on Sunday, April 25, which will be telecast live on ABC.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The COVID-19 pandemic is cancelling or postponing several events, but one longstanding tradition in Orlando is still going strong. The City of Orlando’s MLK Parade usually marches down Orange Avenue, but the city made changes to the event this year. Instead of the traditional parade, the city held a performance at the Dr. Phillip’s Center Front Yard Festival. Lorri Shaban with DPAC said 10 acts that normally participate in the parade showed off their talents on the stage. “This year because we couldn’t’ do the parade we got together with the City of Orlando and we reimagined it,” Shaban said.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Hundreds of boxes were packed with food and rolled out to help feed kids in Central Florida. Friday’s packing and distribution event is part of Orange County’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. pre-day of service event with Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida. King was all about service to man kind so this is what this initiative is doing,” said Demings. Volunteers packed 35,000 meals that will be distributed throughout Central Florida to kids who are getting assistance through the Head Start program. With CARES ACT funding, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida has been able to expand its outreach and increase production to help families in need.

Los Angeles continues to see hospitalizations rise day after day, setting a new record Tuesday with almost 8,000 hospitalized and more than a fifth of those in intensive care units. The San Joaquin Valley and Southern California regions have been hardest hit, with no more capacity in ICUs to treat COVID-19 patients. Ambulance crews in Los Angeles County on Monday were directed to stop transporting patients they can’t resuscitate in the field. Dr. Marc Eckstein, medical director and emergency medical services commander of the LA Fire Department, said the directive recognizes that such scenarios are “all risk and no gain” at this time. The hospital has a 10-bed ICU but has expanded that level of care to three sections of the hospital and is treating 36 patients.
