Orlando police bring back neighborhood patrol units

Read full article: Orlando police bring back neighborhood patrol units

Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolon said heโ€™s bringing back the neighborhood patrol unit so officers can better understand the areas they serve, and help improve relationships between community members and police. Itโ€™s a program that, unfortunately when violent crime took a spike in the 2008 era, we did away with most of our resources when it comes to the neighborhood patrol unit so we could form violent-offender-type units to bring down violent crime activity. Changes include 10 additional officers reviving the neighborhood patrol unit and the department getting funding through the COPS grant and additional budgetary funds through the City of Orlando. โ€œWalk them through the community, introduce them to people so community members will be familiar with them... the relationship between law enforcement and community is essential in transforming the community,โ€ Andrews said. OPD will livestream another conversation with community members Friday at 7 p.m. on its Facebook page.

Orlando police officer terminated after injury

Read full article: Orlando police officer terminated after injury

ORLANDO, Fla. โ€“ Veteran Orlando police officer Elizabeth Waba-Daniels received a formal letter of termination Thursday morning following a meeting with OPD brass stemming from a fall from a police horse that left her on light duty since May 2018. Danielโ€™s attorney, Jeff Appel, told News 6 the officerโ€™s injury has become the foundation for an โ€œad hoc application of OPDโ€™s accommodation of officers injured in the line of duty.โ€Appel is convinced the termination violates the Americanโ€™s with Disabilities Act. Appelโ€™s partner, Joe Cline, said his client was told to return her police property. Daniels has remained silent because of a gag order issued by the department but is expected to comment now that she has been relieved of duty. According to a letter obtained by News 6, she was granted an alternative duty assignment and received full salary and benefits since last year.
