The northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 27 in Lake County are closed as law enforcement continues to investigate a police chase that led to a fatal crash on Saturday.

After a person suspected of stealing a vehicle shot at a police car Wednesday evening, officers started to chase the vehicle, according to the Orlando Police Department.

According to a news release, Orange City Police Sergeant Jason Ward observed three subjects attempting to break into the store. Once the subjects noticed law enforcement vehicles, they got into a Black Nissan Altima and fled the scene driving southbound on North Volusia Avenue. Orange City Police Officers with the assistance of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office successfully deployed spike strips near the intersection of Enterprise Road and South Volusia Avenue. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office set up a perimeter and deployed a police K-9, a news release said. “The investigation also revealed the Nissan Altima was reported stolen out of Orange County on May 18,” officials said.

COCOA, Fla. – Investigators with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) are investigating a police-involved shooting that left a 48–year-old man dead in Cocoa. Officials said patrol officers responded to the 2700 block of US1 around 1 a.m. Saturday after receiving reports that a woman had been run over by a vehicle. Officers on the scene observed the Jeep fleeing the scene while other officers responding to the area attempted to stop the man in the Jeep, but he hesitated and then chose to flee from officers. “Officers attempted a high-risk traffic stop, at which time the suspect put the vehicle in reverse, and disregarding the officer’s commands, began aggressively backing the vehicle toward the officers,” the Cocoa Police Department said. According to a news release, the man struck the side of one patrol vehicle while simultaneously pushing the other patrol car through a fence and down an embankment into a lake.

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A 17-mile police chase topping speeds of 100 mph came to an end when the suspect crashed into a car then slammed head-on into a patrol vehicle, according to the Melbourne Police Department. Dash camera video shows the truck speeding, crossing over medians, driving on the wrong side of the road and weaving through traffic as officers followed behind it. During that time, Johnson drove dangerously on streets filled with traffic, ran red lights and drove off the road multiple times, according to the affidavit. Johnson is also accused of making a U-turn in an attempt to hit a patrol vehicle that he had just passed, records show.
