BALTIMORE – Baltimore protesters pulled down a statue of Christopher Columbus and threw it into the city's Inner Harbor on Saturday night. Protesters mobilized by the death of George Floyd at the hands of police have called for the removal of statues of Columbus, Confederate figures and others. They say the Italian explorer is responsible for the genocide and exploitation of native peoples in the Americas. According to The Baltimore Sun, the statue was owned by the city and dedicated in 1984 by former Mayor William Donald Schaefer and President Ronald Reagan. Statues of Columbus have also been toppled or vandalized in cities such as Miami; Richmond, Virginia; St. Paul, Minnesota; and Boston, where one was decapitated.

Moments later, without warning, she said Fort Lauderdale police officers released tear gas and she ran to a corner, disoriented and overcome by smoke. She remembers the pressure of the rubber bullet hitting her face and strangers rushing to help. As she walks away from police, they fire a rubber bullet and a protester grabs her hand and tries to hurry her. A Fort Lauderdale police officer was suspended for an incident during that same protest after video showed he pushed a kneeling woman to the ground. The department has not released the name of the officer who shot Ratlieff.

LAKE EOLA, Fla. – Over a dozen protesters gathered in Lake Eola Park Wednesday to bring attention to delays in jobless benefits from the state's unemployment system. The rally was part of the “Fix It DEO” day, which brought together unemployed workers in Orlando, Tampa and Tallahassee. Jennifer Kane drove from Melbourne to attend the protest and said she's been waiting for more than 12 weeks for jobless benefits. "People are struggling and they need the money and they need the money now," she said. State Sen. Linda Stewart of Orlando is meeting with the Governor’s staff Wednesday to talk about the people still waiting for benefits.

Officers said the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. while a crowd of protesters gathered at Robinson Street and Rosalind Avenue.

Lake County officials announced Sunday a curfew is in effect until further notice. The curfew will be in effect from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., which starts Sunday evening. “We stand with those peacefully protesting the tragic death of George Floyd and we fully support the rights of our citizens to express their outrage over this situation,” said Lake County Commission Chairman Leslie Campione. “But we condemn vandalism, violence and lawlessness that is causing great harm to communities across our country. To protect our citizens, businesses and first responders, we are imposing a curfew throughout Lake County which starts tonight at 10 p.m. and ends at 5 a.m. until such time as the curfew is lifted.”

ORLANDO, Fla. – Floridians upset at the state's unemployment system took part in a virtual protest across social media platforms on Friday. Langborgh said she filed for unemployment on March 18, but so far hasn’t received a response. The majority of those out of work in Florida are also waiting for payment from the state's bogged down unemployment system. Langborgh said that progress is too slow for many and hopes their message from Friday’s protest will be taken to heart.
