The city of Louisville will pay several million dollars to the mother of Breonna Taylor and install police reforms as part of a settlement of a lawsuit from Taylors family, The Associated Press has learned. Taylor’s death sparked months of protests in Louisville and calls nationwide for the officers to be criminally charged. Crump said the $12 million payout is the largest such settlement given out for a Black woman killed by police. Palmer's lawsuit accuses three Louisville police officers of blindly firing into Taylor’s apartment the night of the raid, striking Taylor several times. The department has also fired Brett Hankison, one of the three officers who fired shots at Taylor's apartment that night.

Leon County jail records showed most were taken into custody for resisting officers and assembling unlawfully. They were met by a phalanx of law officers from the Tallahassee Police Department, Leon County Sheriff's Office, the Florida Highway Patrol, as well officers from the nearby Capitol and Florida State University. For months, activists have staged rallies in Tallahassee to bring attention to police killings they say were unjustified. The incident led Leon County to put in place a curfew from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. While the grand jury declined to hand down indictments against the police officers, it found areas of concern.

NEW YORK – A passenger in a car that drove through a group of Black Lives Matter protesters in New York's Times Square on Thursday says police have interviewed all six people who were in the car and are continuing to investigate the incident. That’s what happened.”One video of the incident posted on social media showed police officers fanning out to keep protesters away from Germanotta’s group as they got into the car. The video shows the car traveling down the one-way street toward an area where the demonstration is blocking the street. Gibson posted a video on his Facebook page indicating that he was at the Times Square protest Thursday night with Germanotta. The car in videos of the Times Square incident had a bull bar but appeared to be black, while the car featured in a Gibson social media post dated Aug. 5 is white.

WASHINGTON – ‎Both the suspect in the slaying of the right-wing protester in Portland, Oregon last weekend and the victim had handguns when their confrontation started after dueling street demonstrations, according to court documents made public Friday. Marshals Service task force opened fire at Reinoehl. Lt. Ray Brady of the Thurston County Sheriff’s Department said investigators have not concluded whether Reinoehl fired any shots. Marshals Service statement issued later said the fugitive task force had “attempted to peacefully arrest him." "Initial reports indicate the suspect produced a firearm, threatening the lives of law enforcement officers” the statement said.

The man who said he made the cellphone video, 22-year-old Raysean White, said he saw Blake scuffling with three officers and heard them yell, Drop the knife! White said he left the window for a few minutes, and when he came back, saw three officers wrestling with Blake. That man just literally grabbed him by his shirt and looked the other way and was just shooting him. The city is about 67% white, 11.5% Black and 17.6% Hispanic, according to 2019 Census data.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. A white Florida police officer was charged with battery Tuesday for allegedly shoving a kneeling Black woman to the ground during a protest march last month, prosecutors said. Broward State Attorney Mike Satz said Fort Lauderdale Officer Steven Pohorence, 29, was seen intentionally touching or striking the 19-year-old woman during a civil rights protest march on May 31. The charge is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail. Pohorence was previously suspended with pay by the Fort Lauderdale police chief but as a result of the battery charge decision, his status will be changed to administrative leave without pay. The union representing Fort Lauderdale officers has declined comment.

TAMPA, Fla. More than five dozen peaceful protesters in Florida who were arrested earlier this month for unlawful assembly while demonstrating against police abuse following the death of George Floyd in Minnesota won't be prosecuted, a state attorney said Monday. State Attorney Andrew Warren in Tampa said his office won't be filing charges against 67 protesters who were arrested two weeks ago in downtown Tampa. The prosecutor's office will also work to expunge the arrest records of the protesters who were taken into custody, he said. In these unlawful assembly cases, there is no value in filing charges," Warren said at a news conference. Prosecuting people for exercising their First Amendment rights creates problems rather than solving them.

A huge Confederate battle flag has been lowered from its towering pole near Interstates 4 and 75 outside Tampa after threats appeared on social media to set it on fire during protests of the killings of black people by white authorities. David R. McCallister, who leads the local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, wants people to know that removing the 30-foot by 60-foot battle flag wasnt a decision made in fear. The decision was we would (temporarily) take down the flag in the bests interests of preserving the park overall, he told the Tampa Bay Times.
