Hundreds of people turned out to the site of Pulse Nightclub on Monday to mark seven years since a gunman took 49 lives and physically wounded 53 others.

Police and witnesses say a manager at a Virginia Walmart pulled out a handgun before a routine employee meeting and began firing wildly in the break room, killing six people and injuring at least six others.

The 21-year-old suspect, Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, was in jail and scheduled to make his first court appearance Thursday on murder charges. We’re a part of their community.”AdThe attack was the nation’s deadliest mass shooting since a 2019 assault on a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, where a gunman killed 22 people. According to two law enforcement officials, Alissa was born in Syria in 1999, emigrated to the U.S. as a toddler and later became a U.S. citizen. The law enforcement official said the suspect’s family told investigators that he had delusions and that they believed he had some type of mental illness.

He said his department has made changes especially after the Pulse Nightclub Shooting in Orlando and the shooting in Las Vegas. There’s now a growing memorial outside of the Orlando Police Department in Valencia’s honor.

The shooter was a member of the Saudi military who was in aviation training at the base, Florida Gov. Earlier Friday, two U.S. officials identified the student as a second lieutenant in the Saudi Air Force, and said authorities were investigating whether the attack was terrorism-related. One of the Navy's most historic and storied bases, Naval Air Station Pensacola sprawls along the waterfront southwest of the city's downtown and dominates the economy of the surrounding area. The base is also home to the Blue Angels flight demonstration team, and includes the National Naval Aviation Museum, a popular regional tourist attraction. The shooting is the second at a U.S. naval base this week.
