SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – Four people were injured and one man was killed in a rear-end crash on State Road 417, which ejected the man into Lake Jesup, according to Florida Highway Patrol

Troopers said the fatal crash occurred at 1:18 a.m. Sunday on SR-417 at mile marker 46 in the southbound lanes of Lake Jessup Bridge. An original report said the crash involved a semitruck that left the scene of the wreck, but troopers said a witness and “digital evidence” revealed only two vehicles were involved.

According to FHP, a 2019 Mercedes SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed in the left lane while a 2010 Toyota Scion carrying four people was traveling in the right lane. Troopers said the driver of the Mercedes, a 39-year-old Orlando man, lost control and hit the back of the Toyota.

According to the report, the front of the Toyota struck a wall, causing the vehicle to rotate and hit the opposite wall on the bridge. The impact caused a passenger to be ejected from the back window and into the lake, troopers said.

FHP said the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office was able to recover the man from the lake and he was pronounced dead on scene.

The driver and passenger of the Toyota were seriously injured while the other passenger had minor injuries, the report said. The driver of the Mercedes had minor injuries.

This crash remains under investigation and charges are pending against the driver of the Mercedes.
