Ask Trooper Steve: Can I speed to catch up to a reckless driver?

Trooper Steve answers viewer questions

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road every week, helping Orlando-area residents become better drivers by being better educated.

The most recent question asked: I received a ticket for speeding but was trying to catch up to a reckless driver who had cut me off. Was I not doing the right thing?

“Just because you see someone breaking the law, doesn’t mean you should, too,” Trooper Steve said. “Some drivers feel the temptation to speed up to a reckless driver to take their tag number or snap a picture. While it’s important to report dangerous drivers to law enforcement, it’s not safe to become a reckless driver yourself.”

In short, Trooper Steve said, let them go.

“I promise you, at the end of the day, karma will catch up to that other driver,” he said.

By committing a traffic violation, chances are you could be the one getting a ticket.
