7-year-old girl dies after crash on I-4 in Seminole County, troopers say

Fatal wreck investigated on I-4 west near Sanford

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – A 7-year-old girl died Wednesday night hours after a crash on Interstate 4 near Sanford, the third serious crash on that stretch of interstate over the last two days, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the fatal wreck occurred at 11:10 a.m. on I-4 west at mile marker 101.

The FHP said an SUV driven by a 21-year-old Port Orange man was westbound on I-4 near State Road 46. The driver didn’t notice that traffic had slowed in front of him, and his SUV struck the back of a car carrying three people from Jacksonville, including the girl, according to troopers.

The girl suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital, where she later died, the FHP said.

The man and woman in the car suffered minor injuries, as did the Port Orange man, according to an FHP report, which stated everyone involved in the crash were wearing seat belts.

Charges are pending against the Port Orange man, and an investigation is ongoing.

The fatal wreck came hours after a Deltona big rig driver was injured after crashing into a dump truck along I-4 in Lake Mary and two days after a 36-year-old Orlando man was killed in an I-4 crash in Seminole County after colliding with the back of a tractor-trailer.
