The FHP the man was traveling west on I-4 and, according to witnesses, was driving “too fast” and “recklessly” when the tractor-trailer struck the back of the dump truck. The big rig driver, who was trapped after the crash, was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital and was in stable condition, according to an FHP crash report.
The dump truck sustained a broken rear axle and was towed from the scene, the FHP said.
According to troopers, the driver of the big rig, a 39-year-old Orlando man, was not injured but was arrested by Lake Mary police on an outstanding arrest warrant. Lake Mary police said the warrant was for tampering with evidence.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts, the crash report stated.
I-4 west was closed near Lake Mary Boulevard, bringing traffic to a standstill. The interstate was later reopened.
Troopers said several crashes have been reported in that area of I-4 and reminded drivers to leave an appropriate distance between vehicles, be careful when changing lanes and move over for emergency vehicles rendering aid.
