4 hurt in wreck Burkholm Road in Mims

MIMS, Fla. – Four people, including three firefighters, were injured late Sunday when a Brevard County fire truck and a pickup truck collided, officials said.

The crash happened around 10:30 p.m. on U.S. 1 at Burkholm Road in Mims.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the fire truck was eastbound on Burkholm Road and entered the intersection in an attempt to travel south on U.S. 1. The 2014 Ford pickup, driven by a 35-year-old Mims man, was southbound on U.S. 1 when the vehicles collided, the FHP said.

Brevard County Fire Rescue said a crew was returning from a call when the two-vehicle wreck happened.

The pickup driver and three firefighters were taken to the hospital, according to an FHP crash report.

The crash happened in front of Angel Chamlee’s home, and she called 911 and rushed out to help.

“It was like the loudest boom you’ve ever heard,” Chamlee said.

Chamlee said the crash caused the fire truck to turn over.

“(The driver of the pickup truck) kept saying ‘I was trying to stop. I was trying to stop. Trying to make it so it wasn’t so bad.’ He had no idea that they were all going to flip at the same time,” Chamlee said.

The pickup driver and one firefighter, a 39-year-old Mims woman, suffered critical injuries, the FHP said. Another firefighter, a 25-year-old Mims man, suffered serious injuries, the crash report stated. The third firefighter, a 53-year-old Mims man, suffered minor injuries, according to troopers.

“One firefighter remains in ICU; the other is in stable condition but remains hospitalized. A third firefighter that was injured in the crash was treated and released,” a spokesperson for Brevard County Fire Rescue said in an update on Wednesday.

All the victims were wearing seat belts, according to the crash report.

The FHP said the wreck remains under investigation.

U.S. 1 was closed in the area, but the roadway was reopened Monday morning.
