2 injured, 1 critically, in head-on crash at Florida Turnpike, I-4 in Orlando, FHP says

Wreck occurred on ramp from southbound Turnpike to I-4

ORLANDO, Fla. – One driver was critically injured and another suffered serious injuries Wednesday morning in a head-on crash on the Florida Turnpike ramp to Interstate 4, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The wreck happened around 5:30 a.m. on the ramp from the Turnpike southbound exit ramp to I-4.

The FHP said a 48-year-old Orlando man was driving a 2012 Ford Aerostar from I-4 onto the Turnpike and failed to negotiate a curve. The van traveled over the raised concrete median and entered the direct path of a 2008 Hyundai Sonata driven by a 33-year-old Floral City man, according to an FHP crash report.

The vehicles collided head-on, causing the van to strike a guardrail, troopers said. The Sonata was propelled off the road and into the center median where it struck the raised concrete, the FHP said.

The van driver suffered critical injuries and was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, the FHP report stated. The car driver was also taken to ORMC, officials said.

The ramp was closed but reopened about 2.5 hours later, the FHP said.

Orlando fire officials reported that the wreck involved a fatality, but the FHP said that information was not correct.
