According to an update on Sunday, the crash involved six vehicles that were all traveling northbound, as well as some non-life-threatening injuries reported among the vehicles’ occupants.

As traffic congestion had already brought northbound vehicles to a standstill, a Honda being driven in the outside lane by a 20-year-old Georgia man struck the rear of a stopped Cadillac, FHP said in the statement. Troopers believe the man failed to observe the traffic jam before crashing.

The impact rotated the Cadillac and sent it into the inside lane, where it was hit by the front of an oncoming Lexus, troopers said. Propelled again, the Cadillac then struck the rear of a Chevy in the inside lane, with the latter vehicle going on to strike the rear of a Hyundai ahead of it, according to FHP. A sixth car — a GMC in the outside lane — sustained minor sideswipe damage, yet troopers were still working Sunday to figure out which vehicle caused it.

The Georgia man was hospitalized with minor injuries while the driver of the Cadillac — a 49-year-old Pembroke Pines woman — and their unidentified passenger were airlifted with non-life-threatening injuries, troopers said. The four other drivers were not taken to a hospital and remained at the scene, according to the update.

By 3:15 p.m., the outside lane had been reopened, according to FHP. By 4 p.m., traffic could be seen flowing freely in the area.

FHP is still investigating the crash.
