ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions about the rules of the road every week, helping Central Florida residents become better drivers by being better educated.
Trooper Steve was asked on Monday, “I’m seeing more and more cars with writing on the front of the windshield and I’m wondering if this is legal here in Florida?

The answer is yes -- and no.
“In today’s world, branding is something everyone can do, and a lot of people choose to do,” Trooper Steve said. “We need to remember, though, that there are traffic laws in place for the purpose of safety and to maintain a cohesive community in the traffic world.”
Florida law prohibits any type of tinting or graphic material below what they call the AS1 line.
“The AS1 line is an indicator on your windshield that prohibits you from putting anything below this portion,” Trooper Steve said. “Often, you will see a strip of tint on vehicles that are on the upper portion of the windshield. This must be done in compliance at or above the AS1.”
Trooper Steve added that, “No one prohibits you from being an individual or branding yourself, but when it comes to placing film over the area where you must see, there must be guidelines. You will need to find a different location to do so other than a spot you use to see.”
