Van passenger killed in crash on SR-528 in Orange County, troopers say

Wreck involved van, car around 8:03 a.m.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – One person was killed in a crash on State Road 528 that shut down the eastbound lanes Monday morning in Orange County for hours.

Troopers said the crash happened west of State Road 520 around 8:03 a.m.

According to a crash report, a Ford van and a BMW sedan were involved in the crash.

Troopers said the sedan was traveling eastbound on State Road 528, west of State Road 520 in the inside lane with the van traveling in the same land and direction, behind the car.

The driver of the sedan, a 74-year-old woman from Cocoa Beach, lost control and ran off the roadway left, according to the report. She then overcorrected to the right, causing her vehicle to reenter the eastbound lanes, in the direct path of the van.

Troopers said the front of the sedan crashed into the left rear of the van, causing the van to rotate and run off of the roadway left. The van’s driver overcorrected to the right, causing the vehicle to travel across the eastbound lanes before striking a guardrail.

According to the FHP, the van then continued to travel east, causing the vehicle’s rear to also crash into the guardrail. At that point, the van overturned and came to rest in the roadway. The van’s passenger – an unidentified woman – was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers said the van’s driver and 6 passengers were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The BMW’s driver was not injured and remained on the scene, according to the FHP.

The crash remains under investigation.

The roadway was cleared around 2:50 p.m.
